aside from the PVC difference between alkyd paint / stain – can one explain the difference in film formations?

i’m looking for more than film thickness, rather wetting / flexibility and pigment anchoring differences
PVC = pigment volume concentration – it is this relationship that determines gloss levels and has a direct effect on viscosity (other factors as well which do not pertain to the question)

I am quite well read on finishes and paints and I have no idea what a PVC difference is. Alkyd is a form of resin formed by the chemical combination of alcohol and acid. It is a durable resin used in oil paints and varnish. Paint compared to stain is more similar in formulation than different. Paint has more pigment and other solids and usually forms a tight barrier to water and air. Stain breathes while providing protection from the sun, more pigment more protection.
