I just went through this same situation. I also had strong smells in the carpet.

After trying everything else, I reached this conclusion:

First choice: Roll up the carpet and get rid of it.

    Second choice…..see First choice, above.

A great deal of staining says pretty clearly that the former owner/tenant either did not clean up properly, or simply did not care. That also suggests there will be a smell, and getting that out will be quite a chore.

If there is no smell you could try a rental steam cleaner. Be warned….that might activate the smell.

If you are in an apartment and have a concrete floor under the carpet you can remove the carpet and use bleach mixed 50/50 with water. Rinse well afterwards. Vacuum up any excess with a water-capable vacuum .

Note: let the bleach solution sit until any foaming stops. This may take a few minutes to half an hour.

BE SURE YOU HAVE WINDOWS OPEN AND A FAN RUNNING.

If you have bare/unfinished wood under the carpet, you could try the same. Rinse well afterwards, and use a water-capable vacuum to clean up the water.

resolve, works every time……but don’t use the one in like the windex type bottle, use the one in like the cylinder shaped can……good luck with that

Rent a carpet cleaner, go over the entire floor twice with cleaner, then a third time using liquid fabric softner instead. That should take care of the stains and the smell. You will eventually need to get new carpet still because most of the smell is actually in the padding, not the carpet itself. But this will work for the time being. GL!

I’m not sure about pet stains but I found an article that talks about eco-friendly ways of eliminating pet odors. The article is at http://www.petsuppliesandmeds.com/eliminating_pet_odors_article.htm.
