I like wearing black nail polish but it always stains my fingernails. I remove it with polish remover and it always stains and leaves marks. How do I prevent this from happening? Thanks for your help!

You need to apply one coat of BASE COAT before you apply the color polish.

This is how a professional does:
    -one coat of base polish
    -two coats of color polish
    -one coat of top coat.

use a good nair polish like opi or dont wear black

  3. LJ says:

use a clear base coat first and that will protect your nails.

coat your nails with clear before you use the black… works for me

before painting them black, buy that Sally Henson hard as nails, clear kind and put that on first then paint…this usually prevents the stains as the clear guards the nail. hope that helps

Use a basecoat before applying the black nailpolish and if its really tough to rid of the stain use pure acetone! I like OPI, Creative Nail, China Glaze, and Essie! I use to like hot topic’s black polish but I think they reformulated it! Great basecoats are Chip Skip by OPI, Stickey By Creative, and Seche Vite!

    dont wear it anymore?

  8. Slash says:

    Clear acrylic first, then black.

  9. CAROL B says:

Try putting a clear coat first. That should stop it from staining.

  12. Devilish says:

Try putting a clear coat on first, then the black nail polish.

  13. Corinne says:

You could try putting on a layer of clear down first.

  14. Jon C says:

Use a coat of clear nail polish first, then put on the black. Trust me, it works, and the black nails look awesome when i’m playing guitar up on stage!

  15. Am I. Incognito says:

Try putting on a base coat first. That way you’re not actually painting your nails, you’re painting over the base coat.

I’m a guy, and don’t do anything like that, but common sense to me wold make me want to put on a clear coat first to block the black, then put on the UGLY black on top.

  17. pooh says:

put clear polish on and after it’s dry paint with the black. I have the same problem with red.

  18. thezaylady says:

Perhaps you could try applying a coat of clear polish before applying the black polish. This would keep the color from resting directly on your nails.

  19. Eliza79 says:

Use a nail primer like Sally Hansen (amazing!) and a clear coat of polish before you add the black. That not only gives you a guaranteed smooth nail but also keeps the black tint from reaching your nails.

sounds like you have a poor brand. switch to a better one..if this doesnt help, then u probably jus cant wear the blk polish…I think its the brand, though. Good Luck!

  21. logic_567 says:

when removing your nail polish, put your finger in a little pool of the remover for about 30 seconds. then the remover starts breaking down the marks and stains. then you can use a qtip or what ever and wipe it clean! good luck. i stick with the black too. haha

  22. an_awsome_woman says:

Use a good base polish first. Be sure when removing the polish you use a cotton ball and stroke from the cuticle to the tip of the nail. Dont over use the cotton ball, it can get messy.
By the way, black nail polish? that is not a flattering color for anyone. If you want to go Goth, try a pearl silver…still not great but better.

  23. MU/Diva says:

Use a clear basecoat (or two) of a GOOD polish- it’s a barrier to keep the dyes from nail polish seeping into your nail. There are also products available (try Sally’s) to whiten nailbeds stained by polish. Give your nails rest from color once in a while, too. And I know you didn’t ask, but black nails say your stuck on yesterday like someone who still wears big shoulderpads! Try a black cherry or a metallic for a new look.

If a clear polish as a base isn’t helping, maybe a opal or cotton candy color, one coat is fine but 2 is better, let if fully dry, then paint over it with black letting it dry between these 2 coats also, you shouldnt be able to see the base coat. I use this all this time. Hope it helps.

  25. me33 says:

Use O P I polish. You can buy it online or at one of the local salons. Not too expensive and it never stains mine.

  26. aly says:

use a base coat and invest in a nice quality polish like opi.

  27. porsha226 says:

trying using a clear first coat. and dont use too many coats of black

  28. M.A.D says:

I suggest using a different brand of nail polish. Some brands can do that and some won’t. Try to stay away from the really cheap brands. They usually don’t stain, but the polish tends to chip off really fast. Before you even paint your nails, clean them and get rid of all the oils and cuticles. Make sure they are dry and always apply in thins layers, allowing each to dry. Also you can try using a base coat and a top coat. Here are some nail polish brands that have worked for me in the past: Opi, Essie, Urban, and Sally Girl (found at many Sally’s Beauty Supply stores).
