Can I paint or stain particle board?

And have it not look stupid? It’s just plan unfinished particle board… needs to be non-toxic, too.

    Yes, you can do either. Do keep in mind though that particle board is just sawdust and glue. So, you’ll definitely need to prime if you’re painting it. I suggest Bull’s Eye 1-2-3 since it is a also a sealer and not just a primer like Kilz. It has been noted that some glue in particle board is toxic and that’s why a sealer would be better than just a primer as the sealer will completely seal in the glue. Here’s a link for the sealer:

    Now, that being said and done, you may want to lightly sand your particle board as it is often not smooth, which will make a difference with your paint. And I highly suggest paint instead of stain.

    Okay… have you considered using mdf instead of particle board? You can get it relatively inexpensively and it comes in different thicknesses. You can get some great textured mdf now too. I guess it all depends on what you want to do with the board.

    yes, it can be painted or stained…i’d go with the paint, it will be harder to see it is particle board…there are all kinds of acrylic primers and paints to use on such a project, check with any paint or hardware store.

    You can probably paint, but not stain! First though, you want to use a good primer (like Kilz). These are available at places like Lowes or Home Depot. If this is unfinished particle board, I’d use at least two coats! Then you can probably paint over that without it looking so bad. The primer itself is not non-toxic while it’s wet… But covering thoroughly with a good non-toxic paint will pretty much ensure that you won’t have to worry about that. There are lots of new choices out there for low-VOC paints or eco-friendly paints (try looking for Yolo). Even so, you don’t want a small child or pet actually eating paint! Even if it’s already dry.
