Can I put a stain on white base paint?

Can I buy a Mahogany coloured stain and use on a white base paint? Or is there an alternate product to achieve the result with??
I want to match the cage to my other furniture which is a dark brown/slightly reddish/mahogany like stain colour. It looks so out of place being white.

So is my best bet painting in a tan coloured base then stain over the top??

I usually tint a primer a light wood tone, then use a gel stain with a graining tool & a bristle brush to soften the grain lines. You can top coat with poly, shellac or whaterver finish you prefer.

usually the base paint is tan or something more neutral. there is a graining tool that you use to create imitation grain with the lighter color showing through

You can use it on white base paint, but you will be able to see through the stain to the white paint.
I do not know what result you wish to achieve.

This is called glazing and is used to produce faux finishes. After the stain is on and you have achieved the look you want, spray on a clear coat of shellac to seal the stain.
