Can I stain over wood that is mostly raw with a little paint design?

I am working on a project and I have painted a design on a piece of wood with acrylic. There is a lot of the bare wood left over and I want it stained without having to mask off the detailed painting. I do not care what the paint looks like after the stain touches it but I am curious as to what it will look like and how it will affect the paint. I also do not want to paint after I stain. How would it affect watercolors on the wood?

    If you have used acrylics you can stain right over them. The stain might get into the grooves of the paint but it will not completely cover the paint and should not penetrate the wood were the paint is. If you painted with watercolors then the stain will be able to penetrate the paint and into the wood and although it might be a different color where the watercolors are if you use a dark colored stain you may not see the paint at all.
