Can I use a solid stain to paint right over an existing stained deck?

My deck is stained a reddish brown. I would like to change the colour to something lighter, but I do not want to sand off all of the existing stain (latex). Can I just stain right over it with a solid stain that is a lighter colour? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

go rent a power washer and blast it clean….. be very careful… those things can remove toes and dig into wood…. start with low psi (they usually come with different attachments for the tip) and a far distance and find the right combo….. let it dry for a few days then stain it and waterproof it

i had a redwood fence and i painted it white. first i used the power washer which took off the old paint. Also took off some of the wood) I bought Behr white stain for decks and fence at Home Depot. i found out that wasnt necessary to power wash it. the stain covered right over the redwood.
