I have to stain some sheets of plywood within the next day and a half. Right now the temperature is expected to reach around 30 degrees F.. Can I use water based stain even though the can says no. Tomorrow will be 44 F. I don’t think I can wait should I risk it?

If unsure, use a fast drying oil based stain instead. Zar makes a fast drying stain that will dry in this atmosphere in about 3-4 hours.

I wouldn’t do it. There’s always a reason why the paint / stain manufacturers put those temperature statements on the cans.

If after application the temperatures freeze, it won’t be long till your finish will begin peeling. Me, I’d wait!!!

  4. Big Bull says:

Water based stains and polyurethane’s cure via evaporation, if the temp is much below 60 evaporation occurs much slower. Around 40 the stain won’t cure at all. It will become sticky and make a huge mess. Find a way to temporarily heat the space your working in. Call your local equipment rental store. Won’t cost much to do it right.

This is a clear case of not following instructions. If the can says no then what part of no do you not understand?

  6. wvparanormal says:

Sure you can use it even though the can says no. The people that made it don’t know nearly as much about it as the people on Yahoo answers do.

Why don’t you just use oil base stain.
