Can you spray paint over the top of wood stain without it causing an issue?

I have a book shelf that we want to spray paint black and I wanted to know if I can paint it without having to sand it down first without any issues with the paint not adhering to the stained surface?

    I use spray paint a lot to convert old to new. I have never had a problem spraying over wood stain. Make sure to wipe it down clean and try to paint the peice outside on a very warm DRY day. If you do it while its humid the paint tends to get gummy. When it comes to spray paint you really do get what you pay for. Get a better brand like Krylon.
