I have a nice LEATHER COUCH but the color is horrible. I need to re-stain it. I have heard so many different things that I am unsure of where to start. I don't know if you have to strip it to get the sealing coat off. I really just have no idea. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
The whole couch is leather, no wood. I'm asking about how to re-stain leather. Thanks for the help.

This is certainly no DIY job.

The results of doing a job like this will depend on the type of leather you have and the condition it is in. The processes for recolouring leather are very different for aniline style leather and pigment coated ones as one uses dyes and the other uses pigments.

The results wil be affected by any grease that is present (particularly on pigment leathers) and the contion of the leather and whether there is any cracking etc.

The professional products that are used today are very good and it is a process that can be done successfully but by a qualified technician.

If you are in the UK LTT have a network of qualified technicians who can do this but the process is not cheap.

Please do not be tempted by the DIY kits on the market and those that tell you this is a simple job as we have seen the results of these and have just seen a £2500 settee completely ruined by DIY products.

Are you speaking of the frame around the leather or the leather itself. If you speaking of the frame that supports the leather. Yes, you would start by stripping first. Make sure you cover the leather because stripping is a messy job. Once you strip you can restain.

Hi. I am sorry but this is not a DIY job, Check your yellow pages, Internet, ect. for people who do this professionally, also some high end car dealers can be contacted, used car division, they know people that change the color of leather interiors, also upholstery shops might give you a lead. I can only tell you the truth. source 30 years contractor, lots of time with car wholesalers and auctions, and know the learning curve is high on how you do this to leather. Jerry
