How can I remove rust stains from clothing?

My old washing machine seems to be giving some of my clothes rust stains. I’ve tried to remove them with bleach (for whites), detergent, and stain removers with no luck. Short of buying a new machine, is there anything I can do?

First, find where the paint has chipped off of the washing machine drum. At the home improvement stores, look for Appliance Touch Up Paint in the color of your washer and dab the paint over the area that is chipped. This will stop the rust from transferring to your clothing when you run a load.

Then, in the grocery or discount store on the laundry/cleaning aisle, look for a product call Wink. It will remove the rust without damaging the fabric.

I use Melaleuca products, it works really well. My husband is a mechanic and it even gets the gear oil smell (worse than cat pee) out!

Go to a hardware store and get a product called "rust out"(or some other product which is to remove hard water stains) and follow the directions, see if that doesn’t whiten things up again. After that, use calgon water softener in your wash to prevent the dinginess. It sounds to me like you have hard water stains.I kinda doubt that your washing machine is causing the problem, so before buying a new washer where you may have the same problem, invest in something less expensive just to be sure.
