how can you get an ink stain out of a white lab coat?

My mom’s pen broke or something on her lab coat- type suit she uses for her work as a doctor. Is there anything she can use to get the stain off? it was a blue pen and my dad’s trying rubbing alcohol, but the stain turned purple and a lighter shade smeared around it.

    Put Clorox(or another bleach) directly on it. Let it air dry. Then wash the lab coat by itself with regular detergent. Keep repeating this until the stain is gone. Don’t put it in a dryer to dry until the stain is gone because the dryer will set the stain and make it impossible to get out.

    I would not use bleach….it will weaken the material, and it also will yellow it over time. I recomend Amonia. (it’s the main ingredient in dry cleaning solution) It’s also wonderful for getting grease out of clothes.

    At this point, rather than try to "remove the stain", as you put it, with some consumer stain removers, I’d try some laboratory solvents on it first. Since you tried rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) on it, and it almost worked, try methanol and ethanol. Then try acetone. Xylene and carbon tetrachloride, if available. Toluene is a bit more accessible and I’d be willing to bet it will work.
    These solvents are unlikely to attack the fibers of the coat but may easily lift the ink. I doubt the coat is stained so much as the ink is just imbedded in the fibers. I don’t think the stain removers will be able to do it all the way, but I bet one of the solvents, or maybe a combination of them, will easily lift away all of the ink components.

    I don’t know if this will work since your Dad has already tried something, but hair spray will take out ink stains.

    I have also used hairspray to remove ink from couch cushions. I works really well. Try it on the lab coat.
