We bought this beautiful rug at a garage sale and it smells aweful. How do we clean the urine/pet smell?

I have three dogs. I would not sell my worst enemy a peed on carpet!
    But, I can clean one!
You can either go to a good pet store, or a local veterinarian and get cleaners.
Or you can do what I do.
I get Woolite pet deodorizer spray and open the bottle I pour it into a bucket with some warm water.
Then I drag the carpet out onto the back deck and get a hand scrub brush and start scrubbing the carpet from end to end with small circular strokes. ON my hands and knees!
I have help lifting the WOOL carpet onto the deck rail where I drape it over hose it down. I let it drip dry all day or two in the sun.
Then I move it back flat onto the deck to dry through before I bring it in the house.
Or you could rent a Great Dane, bring the rug back to the house you bought it from at MIDNIGHT! with a collection of poo from the Great Dane that you fed prunes to! Kidding, but what they did was mean I am sorry for you!

They sold you a rug that had been peed on by one of their pets?

    Thats horrible!

if it’s an oriental rug, be careful… improper cleaning can ruin it. It might be costly, but the only way to absolutely guarantee that ALL of the urine will be removed, along with every trace of odor, is by having it cleaned in a decontamination pit. look for local carpet cleaning outfits and rug specialists(some companies have both of these).
