How do I get years of grease stain off the ceiling?

My dad is fixing up my deceased Uncle's house and in the kitchen the ceiling and some of the wall has set in grease stain from when my Uncle cooked. The ceiling is tile. Is there anything powerful enough to get the grease off? It's been like that for many years now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

My uncle has a resteraunt – this is what he does. Start off with a broom, sweep the ceiling. Then use dawn (yes regular household dawn – it cuts grease), get a ladder and wipe the celing gently. Don't rub too hard or it will peal the paint. This should remove most of the stain. Finally use a spray gun with alchohol (rubbing alchohol, not the drink) and spray it on, and dab it off. This should remove most of the remaining oil. All that should be left is the stain. Either paint it over with a similar color paint (often white) or put some peroxide in a spray bottle and spray it on the celing – it will lighten the stain. Good luck.

I thiink you will either do a ton of scrubbing or best yet, replace the tiles. I think I'd prefer a fresh look with a new ceiling.

Use a product called CLR. Wipe and rub. The grease will come off, but will take some elbow grease! Then clean with ordinary detergent.

theres some S**T called KILZ its a paint……paint over it and its gone, we did something like that in the bathroom (above the shower) to get some of that mold stuff off the celing…works..its slick.

Try Oxyclean, the liquid version. Then apply a coat of KILZ before painting.

what sort of tile? ceramic / polystyrene? If poly, just replace.

I would do it in several steps:
    - Wipe off as much as possible with paper towels or shop rags
    - Use a cleaner such as 409, Simple Green, Mr Clean & rags to cut the grease. Use full-strength in a spray bottle. Pay extra attention to the grout lines as they will probably be the hardest to clean.
    - Rinse well with warm, clean water (change often)
    - Wash with a solution of 1/2 cup TSP, a few drops of liquid dishwashing detergent and 2 gallons of warm water.
    - Rinse again with clean water

Now you have cleaned the grease off, and removed the grease cleaner, too.
