I just moved to a home with well water, and keep getting random stains on my laundry that look like iron stains. Is there something I can add to the laundry load to prevent this from happening?

You will need to clean your washer often with a lime cleaner such as lime away..it removes the iron stains well. Spray the inside drum of the washer..let stand for a few minutes, and then run a rinse/spin cycle through. You can take a cleaning brush and give it a light scrub to ensure the cleaner gets into the holes in the drum. Just keep an eye on it…you will learn how often you will have to clean your washer. I lived in a farm house that had the same problem years ago. There are cleaners for washing machines, but I am not sure if they will remove the iron. I do not like CLR..it never worked on any hard/iron water I have ever had..better for town water…not well water. Stick with Lime Away, or Kaboom Lime Cleaner…both are good.

Rusty red or brown staining on laundry is usually caused from excess iron.

You can remove the stains on clothing using a rust stain all purpose remover that you can buy at a department store. You simply add about half a cup to water in your washer, add clothing, let soak for 5 minutes and then add detergent. Do not add bleach! Stains should come out easily using this method.

    Water Treatment options:

    Water softener
    Whole house iron filter
    Distillation
