Well I would suggest using some pet shampoos and some old rags and maybe a bucket of water.Give your horse a carrot and soak the tail in shampoo and water.Scrub the tail as needed. Then take it out dry and rinse or repeat shampoo process. Then dry and brush out.Hope this helps!

Here’s a couple of methods that you can use to get rid of the urine stains
2 tablespoons Mrs Stewarts Bluing added to a bottle of Infusium 23 leave in conditioner. This conditions manes and tails while whitening.
Another good formula to remove the yellow color is one made of 50% liquid Woolite and 50% human hair peroxide (20 volume – get it at Sallys), dilute this 50% with water, add a little conditioning shampoo. Shampoo this mixture into the stained portion of the tail m, and let remain for 3 to 5 minutes. Wash out and shampoo and condition as normal.

Try using a hair dye in the color to match. Bleeching can cause irritation problems.

try Suave. that is what i used to use when i was showing and i would just scrub the tail with an old rag and some shampoo a few times and it would look nice.

Quicksilver. It works best on grey & white hair, just don’t leave in too long or you’ll have shades of purple :) (Did that to a sale horse once..oops!) I was an arabian show groom, 1/2 the show string was grey, this stuff WORKS. Good luck :)

I show Paints and many of them have white or partially white tails! Such a nuicance.
But in my opinion, the best solution is plain old dishdetergant and then a white spot cleaner used for horses. It’s fast and easy and inexpensive.
Bathe your entire horse as per normal. I use Ivory dish soap in their wash pail (I’m sure you know to not add just plain soap directly to their skin or it takes forever to remove!) I wash my mare’s tail in the bucket of soapy water when I’m finished with their body.
Then I take my purple colored spot remover (there are many brands and I suspect they all work fine) and put a teaspoon or two in my hand and apply it to their white socks, any white spots that are stained and to the ends of their white tails. It needs to sit for about 5 minutes, but don’t leave it too long or it can actually turn the white a purple tone. Go around with fresh water and rinse everything really well. If you have never used similiar products you will be shocked how much whiter they are in 5 minutes of sitting! If the tail still has a tinge of yellow, just reapply fresh stain remover, wait another 5 minutes and rinse again.
I know you wanted household ingredients, but in my opinion stain remover is better than anything you will concoct at home, and is cheap. One bottle of stain remover will last for several years if you attend only 4-6 shows a year (I guess it would depend how much of your horse is white and stained – some Paints are 75-90% white and they obviously use alot more than my current show horse who is 90% dark!) One last tip – make sure you rinse this product off really well and don’t use it on open areas or near their eyes. If you have a cut on your hands you’ll soon discover that it stings, so it can be hard on skin. Neither my horse or I are bothered if we use it as directed – I don’t wear gloves and have no problems. But I suspect you’d have problems if you didn’t rinse it well.
When I’m too rushed to bath before a show I will use this on my horse’s socks, and with her socks glistening white it looks as though I’ve done an entire bath!
If your horse continues to have a dingy tail after that, you probably need to go to the drugstore and buy a human hair product that whiten’s people’s grey, dingy hair.
Good luck. I love grey horses, or any horse of a unique color, but they do present a few challenges when it comes to keeping them clean!

I have a pinto i know how aggravating yellow stains can be. You want to use something with blueing in. Blueing is a whitening agent. Not all whitening shampoos have blueing in them.. Quic Sliver is a great whitening shampoo, i think it has blueing in it. But if you leave it in to long , more than 10minuets it will turn the tail purple , it has happened to me. The best way is to scrub and rinse, if the tail is still yellow, put more on it and scrub and rinse. You said that you would prefer house hold ingredients, laundry soap. I know Wisk has blueing in it. And i have used Wisk it works great. It won’t hurt his skin either, i was afraid of that when some told me to use Wisk. People with sensitive skin are told to use Wisk for thier laundry because it won’t irritate their skin. My horse never had a problem with it, and it will not turn anything purple. It dose how ever dry the tail out, but once it is all clean if you put conditioner and let sit for a little while, like while you are clean you tack, it will be fine. You can even use really cheap human conditioner like Suave or V05. Good luck.

i have a big white gelding… we use that dawn with bleach alternative and we wash him before every show and he stays pretty white.. we usually soak his tail in soapy water and wash it alot.. but it aint that hard..

I have a grey mare with yellow tail. I used Palmolive dishwashing soap with Oxyclean in it. It took 2 sudsings to get it clean, but WOW it was clean and white. I then used a heavy dose of Mane and Tail to condition it. I wouldn’t recommend it for every time, it can strip the oils out, but for once in a while it works very well. Also keeping the tail braided and in a tail bag helps.

EASY! (some is probably spattered mud stains too)
Use what they use on the Clydesdale’s feet when they are in parades. (as told to me by one of their grooms whose job it is to keep those big feathered feet sparkling white)

Get some Flowers Of Sulphur (powders) at your pharmacy.
Wash the horse’s tail. Rub that into the tail. It will be LEMON YELLOW, don’t be alarmed!

DO NOT BRUSH while the tail is wet. WAIT until the tail is COMPLETELY DRY and the simply brush it all out. It may take several times if the tail has been yellow/tan/brown for a long time, but it will finally get it out and is not harmful to the horse or the hair.

All those chemicals in dish setergents and bleaches will burn your horse’s skin and strip the natural oils from his hair…do not use those things. People come up with some awful things!
    Good luck.

Peroxide is a whitening agent – but the best way I know to get rid of yellow tail is with Rio Vista Hi-Ho Silver – it’s the best on the market for shiney grey coats and it also has a yellow-out agent.

There is a shampoo called Glo (made by formula 707. This contains a powerful whitening agent in it. The only place I am able to buy this is on their website.

Checkout http://www.buy707.com, type in Glo in the search bar. it will bring it right up. I am sure this will make a huge difference and whiten the tail and the rest of the body will be shiny and beautiful.
