How do I safely cover a bleach stain?

I have a pretty old dress which got stained with bleach when it was being handwashed. The dress is 100% cotton, and it’s a fairly light lavender color. I’m not sure if it would be better to bleach the entire dress and then dye it, or just use a really dark dye that would mask the bleach spot. I’m also not sure what kind of dye to use. Because the dress is so old, I would feel most comfortable using a non-chemical dye (especially if I am also using bleach).

If this fabric is really old, you may find that the spot with the bleach will start to deteriorate. In that case, its time for a new dress, hehe.

I’m not an expert on bleaching clothes… you might ask this question in the cleaning/laundry area… someone with more experience may see it there. I have however, used bleach in woodworking, and had to repair bleach ‘stains’ in things like carpeting, etc.
With that in mind, I’d avoid bleaching the entire dress, and would try instead to ‘spot dye’ the stain. Use a lighter color dye to begin with, and repeat as necessary. (Some dyes will get darker as they are repeatedly applied)

Depending on where the bleach spot is located, you might consider adding a pocket, hehehe.

    Good Luck

Don’t bleach the entire dress. Use any kind of dye that is used for cotton. Get a dark color and follow all of the directions. I could give you more of an answer if I knew what part of the dress the stain was on and the size of the stain. If it is on the bottom, maybe you could hem the dress a bit. If its a small stain, maybe you could match a permanent marker and just dab the ink on the spot. Hope something works out for you.
