how do you get dark stain, not water stain, out of fine wood furniture?

This stain looks to be from an alarm clock that was sitting on the wood top. It is smooth, but discolored. Tried polish, but didn’t do anything.

    Remove the polish carefully with white spirit. Then try some bleach on just a small part of the stain only to test. Leave for a little while then wipe thoroughly with damp cloth. Dry it with hairdryer. If it looks okay when dry then treat the rest of the stain in the same way. Then polish. Whatever you do, don’t leave the bleach on too long and do not apply it to the part which isn’t stained.
