I got yellow nail polish on my NEW shirt. D= I dabbed it with nail polish remover when the stain happened, but it didn’t come out. I put it in the washer and it still didn’t come out. How can I get the stain out? It’s a super cute shirt, too. Help!

If you accidentally get nail polish on your shirt or other clothing, there are a few things you can try to remove it. Before trying any of these items it is a good idea to test them on an inconspicuous area of the clothing to make sure that they don’t remove the color from the shirt in addition to the nail polish.

Step 1-Saturate a clean cloth with acetone nail polish remover. Pat the stain with the polish remover. Do not rub the area or you could cause the stain to spread.

Step 2-Purchase pure acetone from a beauty supply or drug store if the nail polish remover does not work. Most commercially sold acetone nail polish remover is only 50-percent acetone and might not be strong enough to tackle the stain on your shirt.

Step 3-Use a fabric stain remover, such as Shout, on the spot after you remove the worst of the polish with the acetone.

Step 4-Try a stronger stain removal product such as Goo-Gone if the nail polish stain is stubborn and still has not lifted from the fabric.

Step 5-Mix a solution of hydrogen peroxide and water in a 1:1 ratio if the shirt that you got the polish on is white. Do not use hydrogen peroxide on a colored shirt because it causes most colors to run. Spray the solution on the stain and pat it dry with a clean cloth.

Step 6-Launder the shirt as you normally would once most of the nail polish is gone.

Step 7-Bring the shirt to a dry cleaner that specializes in stain removal if you are unable to get the stain out at home.

Take it to a Professional Dry Cleaner before your cleaning attempts wreck it all together.
