It’as rough year for salt and boots. I answered this yesterday: While the traditional cleaner is vinegar and water the solution does nothing to alleviate the drying effects of the salt on the leather. My method to clean off salt stains and add suppleness to the leather I use baby oil or Vaseline. I use it at the end of the day and saturate the stain with baby oil or Vaseline, let it sit for a while and then wipe it off in the excess. If there is no excess to wipe off because it has soaked in then I apply more. Neither are made for leather, but it does work. The common cleaning solution is half and half vinegar and water which cleans the salt but doesn’t help with the way salt dries out leather. I also make sure that twice a month I use a leather waterproofing liquid made by nik-wax that guys who make ski wax. Also, many shoe shops sell salt removers and cleaners and waterproofing products to help keep your boots from being ruined by the salt. In a winter like this waterproofing and treating boots frequently is essential. NikWax is sold in ski, hiking and outdoor shops. A couple traditional waterproofing treatments for leather are olive oil, lard, and "dubbin" an all natural combination of oil, wax, and tallow compound that cleans, conditions and waterproofs leather. The more of this you apply, the more the leather loves you, or so my hubby’s father says.
