I spilled a gallon of pecan colored wood stain in my beige carpet and its dried in now. I dont know what chemical would remove it. I can’t replace the carpet I am renting an apartment.

Try using a steamer or maybe some Goof Off brand mess remover.

is it possible to re-wet it? it’s easiest to clean up if you don’t let it dry. is it oil based or water based? – depending on which of the above, attempt to add water or oil to it, and see if it will re-wet. if so, you’re in good shape. try to clean out as much of the color as you can by scrubbing just with the oil or water, then use paper towels or a towel to dry it until it’s just damp. if you’ve been using oil, then mix a little soap (hand soap or dish soap should work fine) with water, and attempt to get as much of the oil out as possible. if it’s water based, skip that step. then get a good carpet spot cleaner (Resolve works really well), and work that in, wipe it up, and repeat until it’s clean.

if it’s totally dry, and won’t re-wet… you might be out of luck, unfortunately. you COULD attempt to cut that part of the carpet out, match the carpet, and get a fresh piece to stick in if you think the landlord will be a total pain about it. otherwise you could cover it with a piece of furniture or a rug until you move out.
