The only practical way to remove pet stains, is to avoid getting them. You should have kept the puppy in an area that was not carpeted until he became potty trained. Most people put the pets into the kitchen or bathroom, or basement, and put down newspaper to potty train the dog. You will probably rub the carpet raw before you get the stain out, and the smell will be there forever. Some mistakes just can’t be covered up or cleaned up easily. My advice – get a cat the next time – they come pre-programmed to use a litter box or the great outdoors and don’t make those kind of messes!!!

immediately soak up the stain with a towel as much as possible, by stepping on it, then spray thoroughly with 1/2water 1/2 vinagar solution, let sit for a moment, then soak that up.

Vinegar and water works great. I tell all my clients to use it. One part white distilled vinegar to two parts water.

we’ve always had really good success with this technique:

Pet stains are organic, so an enzyme product for pet stain removal is essential. There are a number of good quality carpet cleaning sprays made specifically for organic stains (they work on the stuff your kids leave behind too!). You don’t need to buy a specialized ‘pet urine cleaning product’. Find one you like, and keep it on hand. If you don’t have any – now is a good time to get one. You should be able to find something appropriate at the local janitorial supply store, or a pet store.

Spray the product on the stain. Once the spot is sprayed as per the directions, add this extra step – it makes all the difference:

For complete pet stain removal, cover the entire spot with a plastic bag. Leave it there overnight, or at least 12 hours. This gives the enzymes plenty of time to do their ‘work’ of digesting the organic residues. Some time the next day, remove the bag and allow the air dry. I am warning you now that this will likely really stink!

Once the area is dry, continue with the finishing directions on the cleaning product. I liked to shampoo the carpet and then do one last pass with a rinsing solution of water and vinegar.

    Good luck!

Yes, purchase a quart bottle of enzyme pet urine stain remover. Use these directions as they are different from those suggested or those on the label. Mix the enzymes 10 to 1 with warm water and pour this on the urine stain. Instead of plastic, place a damp white terry cloth towel over the stain and pat it down flat. The enzymes will digest the urine, as the carpet is drying, the enzyme/urine combination will wick up into the cloth. You will notice a discoloration on the white towel. Repeat this procedure if you fill it is warranted. To locate all the urine stains you should invest in a black light(ultraviolet), use it after dark with the lights out, the urine will glow. Also, keep your pet off of the carpet, out of your bedroom, and off of the furniture. Pets peeing on expensive mattresses is quite common. Take charge, do not let your pet, an animal, run your household.
