How to remove stains from wood counter top?

I have wooden counters in my apartment. My landlord is cheap and never put any type of sealer or whatever to protect the counter surface. So the counters are just bare wood basically. Not sure on the type of wood.

So as you’d imagine over the years some substances have come to stain the wood. Wine, coffee, etc. have left some splotches and rings from the wood.

Does anyone know any clever ways to remove such stains from the wood? Obviously I don’t want to do anything too harsh that may discolor the wood or something.

You could try that Oxi-clean stuff to get some of the stains out. Then to help protect it coat generously with mineral oil, (not vegetable oil as it will go rancid on you) Several heavy coats to begin with then periodically as you see it needs it.

Find mineral oil at walmart, less than a buck for a bottle.

After wood gets stained not much you can really do short of painting it. Or you could turn the wood over unless it has a odd shape then your out of luck. You could always cover the wood with vinyl or tile.

If the wood was never sealed, you may be able to get the stains up with a very fine sandpaper. Use caution and common sense.

If the stains come up, consider sealing with Butcher Block Mineral Oil.
