I have a mahogany wood daybed that I want to paint or re stain the antique black color. Do I have to sand?

It is definitely finished wood and I am looking to change the color on this somewhat big daybed with trundle piece. If I am going to black can I paint it or do I have to sand and restain? Do I need to buy a sander from Home Depot or similar? I am a first timer at this so comprehensive answers welcome! Thanks.

You definitely do need to get the glossy finish off. I do not recommend buying a sander just get some sand paper. Also, at Home Depot they have a product you can buy that will take the glossy finish off without sanding, but I can not remember what it is called. I work at Home Depot in the paint department and I know that it works really good.

You do have to sand it down to remove whatever was put over the stain (most likely a urethane sealer) to protect it. If you don’t, the paint will chip off. If you are painting it a solid black, you don’t have to sand to the bare wood, but you do need to get the protective top coat off. If you are staining darker, you do have to sand to bare wood, or the stain will look blotchy.
