If the leather is truly tanned, and not sprayed with vinyl like modern sneakers are, you can simply use a dark shoe polish and the leather will even out a great deal. You say it is old, so I am hoping the leather finish is "real", and this will work.

Get some deep brown Kiwi polish, and rub it in very well. It'll darken the light areas a lot, and not do much to the already dark areas. Adding a little spit to the polish helps some, as it brings the polish into the leather some (ask any Marine). After application, either brush with a shoe brush or rub off the excess with paper towels.

my advice…take it to someone who does that…restore old purses and hand bags….to save the bag but if you must DIY then try this sight. http://www.motorcycleanchor.com/motorcycle/how_to/mc_leather.html

Get yourself a bottle of shoe stain..Wipe it on & let it dry well.
