    Depends on how much work you want to put into it. If you want a truly black stain you may have to apply coat after coat to get the black color you want. If the stain you find doesn’t already have a poly in it you will also need to poly. I’d say if you are going for a black-black, paint it with either a Satin or Semi Gloss finish. This will be the quickest remedy and you will eliminate a few steps.

    I’d go with the darkest walnut stain available. Painted will look a bit like the assemble-yourself tv stands you can get at Wal-mart. Wood is more elegant with stain.
