    I was born with a huge one on my face. The doctors told my parents it had to be removed or at least minimized or it would grow over my eye…I’m 19 and have had 13 laser surgeries, starting from the age of 2. I don’t know for sure how much it costs, but don’t count on your insurance paying for it…ours did for a long time, but our doctor had to fight for us, saying it was a necessary procedure, and not just cosmetic. As far as the procedure goes, it sort of depends. you would probably get the pulse-dye surgery done which is what I’ve had my whole life. The lasers themselves have gotten a LOT better. I had my last surgery when I was 16 and my doc said that if the laser they used for that surgery was around when I was younger, I probably would have only needed two or three surgeries. This newer laser they used on me, made it so they didn’t need to knock me out. This is how that surgery went for me:
    -wait in the waiting room for almost 2 hours (they put numbing cream on my hand so when they put the iv in it doesn’t hurt at all)
    -doctor came in and traced my birthmark with a marker/pen
    -walked back to the operating room and climb onto the table.
    -there were a few nurses sort of surrounding me to make me feel safe, and make sure I wasn’t uncomfortable so the doctor could do his job with no distractions
    -doctor performed the surgery, and I walked out of the operating room 10 minutes later and into my car.

    Like I said, I was awake for my last surgery, but I don’t know if I would suggest it if it’s you’re first time. Although I would probably do it again that way, it hurt…a lot. (They said it would feel like a rubber-band snapping, and was supposed to use numbing cream, but I didn’t, so it felt more like shots)). But in addition to the pain, it can be kind of traumatizing to actually feel and know your skin is being zapped. They covered my eyes with a cool cloth because the laser is bright, but I could still see the flashes, and I dreamt about them for weeks.

    i don’t know if you care about this or not, but the laser actually looks like a pen. what it does, is zap the blood vessel. (it’s the right wavelength so it actually passes through the skin, directly to the blood vessels.) The laser bursts the blood vessel, so the birthmark actually turns purple and really is a giant bruise. But, this new laser somehow keeps the swelling down (when i was younger, my cheek would swell over my eye for about 3 days). I think it takes about a week to fully heal now-a-days, and it’s not really that painful…it just burns a little bit. I learned that it’s important to put on the medicine that the doctor gives, otherwise the skin blisters and scars (not horribly, but enough). General anesthesia is how I had my other surgeries. It wasn’t that bad, but i hated waking up from it. It always took a while to wake up, and I had to stay for a while to make sure the anesthesia didn’t make me sick. No fun.

    Finally, it at least should reduce the size AND color. You may not notice the change because you probably look at it every day and it changes gradually (even after a month), but I can almost guarantee that if you compare before and after pictures, you’ll see a difference.

    I understand it’s different for everyone, but I’ve had a decent experience with it, and actually hope to get another surgery done soon.

    I’m 15 and also have port wine stain on my whole left leg
    lasers will only fade the color of it and cost about $70 per treatment day
    I went for about a year and not much changed and when i when to the beach and got tanned they turned back to their original color

    hey my little cousin has the same problem. her parents take her to get laser surgery. their insurance covers it though…but i heard it was once $300.she told me it stings a little and there’s a bruise that goes away in about a week. her mom also puts cover up on it so it’s not as noticeable. hope i helped…good luck!
