If cleaning it yourself has not worked, have Stanley Steemer out. They removed a lot of old stains from our carpets.

I was researching carpet-scrubbers on Consumer Reports, and they said that no off the shelf treatment or home scrubber works as well as the rental scrubbers and cleaners that are set up to rent from chain pharmacies/grocery/discount stores, but having Stanley Steemer out is noticeably better than those, too.

So I did and it’s true.

There is a product on the market called goo gone..you need to use a white cloth to put it on the stain and open a window as the product has a smell that will give you a headache….but I have used it for many tough stains…..you can buy it from walmart…menards…..home depot….if you do try it, just use a warm soapy water after you are done to get as much of the product out of your carpet as possible….

If it’s just cough syrup, the best way to get it out is to soak it out…Just saturate the carpet in that area with warm, soapy water, cover the stain with a wet, soapy washcloth or rag, and let it sit for an hour. Come back and give it a bit of scrubbing…it shouldn’t even require a scrub brush, just the washrag…if it’s still sticky, add more warm water, and leave it for a bit longer. Remove the excess water either with a wet/dry vacuum, like a shop vac, or if you don’t have one, place towels over (You can use paper towels too.) and stand on it, repeating with dry towels till it’s mostly dry. Cough syrup is mostly sugar and water, 3 month old cough syrup is sugar and dirt, and if you re-hydrate and soak up the sugar, the rest comes with it.

I got a two year old root beer stain out of a clients carpet by using a laundry product she had called Zout. I saturated the stain and let it sit for a while then scrubbed it with a wet cloth. I did that twice and the stain was gone.
