I would prefer a lighter cherry. How can this be achieved? The cabinets are Hickory. Is it better to stain or paint them if I want them cherry.

You will find it almost impossible to stain the wood to a lighter color than it is now. Using paint will take away the timber look though. You could try using oxalic acid on it, that will lighten the color of your timber. The only other option I can think of, is to use one of the graining paints, you would probably find that in a craft or art shop possibly hardwares will have it. Basicaly it is a two coat paint system and you use a graining tool on the second coat to give it a fake wood grain look.

i would stain, cuz i don’t know if the paint would ruin the wood or mess it up

You can not achieve what you wish to do. There is no such thing as a cherry paint. You can buy some reddish tinged paint but it’s still a painted cabinet, not a stained cherry one.

You have hickory. Even if they were raw hickory which they are not, a cherry stain would do virtually nothing. Hickory is so hard and dense that no stain would penetrate to any degree enough to make a color. And anyone in the know that all the beautiful and wild grains that hickory has can never ever ever duplicate cherry.

If you want cherry then you have to buy cherry cabinets. There is an alternative. All cabinet manufacturers today make what we call a poor mans cherry. They make a maple cabinet which is about 20% cheaper then cherry and stain it with a cherry stain, usually a darker one. The average joe will never know.
