Is it safe to store clothes in the basement? Will they become stained with mold or mildew?

We’re moving and i’ll be losing storage space in our actual apt, and will need to start storing the girls extra clothes, toys and other thing in the basement. Selling them isn’t an option, we’re not done having kids so we want to keep them. I’m scared to store things in the basement. I have them in plastic storage bins, but i’m worried they will somehow get mold or mildew stains on them…the clothes anyway. This might sound dumb, but can they get mold or mildew stains if they don’t get wet? Could humidity cause it alone?

They will not get stains, but they might pick up a musty odour. To be on the safe side, get some extra large zip lock bags and put them in the bags and then in the containers. The damp air cannot penetrate those sealed bags. The extra large bags are available at Walmart. They are huge enough to put 3 or 4 comforters in them.

Many people run dehumidifiers in the basement to eliminate extra humidity problems. However, if the garments are in a sealed plastic container, they will not be affected.
