My 5 month old puppy just got a hold of a chocolate wrapper. Any danger?

There was a mini snickers wrapper sitting on my table and my puppy got a hold of it. I already ate it but there was a little bit of a chocolate stain on it. I don’t think he ate any of it but he had the wrapper in his mouth for a few minutes before I could get it away from him.

Should I be worried or will he be alright?

There’s no danger of a bit of chocolate stain. Here’s an article to refer to in the future:
    http://www.laurelwoodpetclinic.com/chocolatetoxicity.html
The type of chocolate in a snickers bar is milk chocolate, and not very much chocolate is in it. Milk chocolate is the least dangerous. Dark chocolate is more dangerous and Baker’s Chocolate is the most dangerous of all.
Theobromine, a caffeine like substance, is the toxic substance in chocolate. Baker’s chocolate has much more in it than Milk chocolate.
Even if your pup ate the whole candy bar, it would probably be fine other than perhaps an upset tummy, maybe diarrhea from al lthe sugar and candy content in general.
I’d never purposely feed a dog chocolate because I wouldn’t want the dog to get a taste for it and then raid an Easter basket or a Halloween bag and get ahold of a toxic amount.
Weight of dog and amount/type of chocolate is what counts.
    Your pup should be fine.

He’ll be fine. You need pretty much milk chocolate to be toxic.

    Here’s a guideline:

White chocolate: 200 ounces per pound of body weight. It takes 250 pounds of white chocolate to cause signs of poisoning in a 20-pound dog, 125 pounds for a 10-pound dog.
Milk chocolate: 1 ounce per pound of body weight. Approximately one pound of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 20-pound dog; one-half pound for a 10-pound dog. The average chocolate bar contains 2 to 3 ounces of milk chocolate. It would take 2-3 candy bars to poison a 10 pound dog. Semi-sweet chocolate has a similar toxic level.
Sweet cocoa: 0.3 ounces per pound of body weight. One-third of a pound of sweet cocoa is toxic to a 20-pound dog; 1/6 pound for a 10-pound dog.
Baking chocolate: 0.1 ounce per pound body weight. Two one-ounce squares of bakers’ chocolate is toxic to a 20-pound dog; one ounce for a 10-pound dog.

Such a small amount would be very unlkely to harm even a puppy. Just be careful with this in the future.

    What type of breed?
    How big is your puppy?

I don’t think you should have too much to worry about. I would call the emergency vet in your area and ask them to be sure. They will generally advise you about things like this over the phone.

I had to call when my Pug ate some Benadryl, and again when he drank an entire cup of coffee. They told me what to do right over the phone.

They may be listed as "after hours vet," or if you can’t find them in the phone book, many vet offices will have their number on their answering machines.

Hope your baby is okay… (I’m sure he will be)

Don’t worry…He will be fine….Had he eaten the chocolate bar itself it could be an issue but I am sure that a piece of wrapper won’t be an issue.

  9. ♥Kansas♥ ♥Girl♥ says:

He should be fine. The amount of chocolate that could have been on the wrapper shouldn’t even bother him at all.

The only thing is you shouldn’t feed your dog pounds of chocolate, or chocolate every day. A little bit every now and then wont hurt your dog.

  10. ♥Golden gal♥ says:

Heck no! He will be just fine! I dont even want to tell you the stuff I have pulled out of my pups mouth! lol

  11. surette.L says:

there wasnt enough chocolate in the rapper to harm your dog he /she probably only got a few licks of the rapper anyways if he had ate the bar then yes that could be a problem

  12. Ally says:

no he will poop it out but chocolate cant hert a dog or puppy

  13. john n says:

he will be ok for the amount he might of injested. it is bakers chocolate that is hard on them and it can take a good 28 oz to make them sick. if he ate any of the wrapper it will pass through. they are quick when they want to be especilly when it comes to food lol.

dont worry over my dogs life time hes probably had at LEAST 1 lb so no worry he/she will be fine since he only got a tiny bit anyway…and i can tell your a new pet owner…the first little while youll freak about everything…a little chocolate wont do any damage…alot of things are fine so dont be so worry struck…you will be fine… if you think somethings horrible it probably is just ur imagination…the only thing that amount of chocolate will do it be a tiny treat for them!

  15. Truth says:

I don’t think he is going to fall over dead any time soon.
I know you aren’t suppose to give dogs chocolate. But nobody knew that when I was growing up and we gave our dogs chocolate all the time and no problems at all.
But I think you should keep it to a minimum. One little piece I’m sure wont hurt him.

  16. midnight says:

  17. gio says:

your dog will be totally fine. as long as he didnt eat a large amount of chocolate or swallow the wrapper, you have nothing to worry about.

  18. Cookidoughicecream says:

No, the little bit won’t hurt but make sure in the future he doesn’t get any more than that.

  19. NONAME says:

    hehehe ..

  20. Domenica says:

yes you should be worried because chocolate is toxic to dogs the chemical that is in it is know to dogs as poison.if your dog eats it call the vet because your dog could get sick

  21. Jason S says:

its fine. my dog eats chocolate a lot cuz he steals it and he has never gotten sick.

  22. pink_chica_13 says:

my dogs eaten quite a bit of chocolate. (not on purpose of course) but he’s fine.

  23. Soul T says:

Just keep and eye on him….a wrapper he should be ok…with puppies we have to have immaculate clean homes with nothing left out you wouldn’t want them to get…it’s like child proofing your home on a daily basis….they are teething and like to have things in their mouths

  24. Mr. Peabody says:

The dog should be fine but for the people who love their dog don’t let them eat sugar (including chocolate). A dog’s teeth will rot just as easily as humans – the difference is that there’s no such thing as dog dentures (not to mention the pain of cavities that the dog can’t explain to you). When a dog can’t chew properly, either due to loss of teeth or abcesses, pain, gum disease, etc, it will not eat – period. Not even junk canned food in gravy. Then it will die. Period. A dog doesn’t know better. But it’s owner should.
