My contractor and I went to the homedepot and bought a paint to stain the doors. We chose Red maghoney and we?

finished paiting the doors, we figured out the the color in the can is not red maghoney. So whose fault would that be, my fault or the homedepot because the label on the can or gallon said something and the color inside the gallon is something else? Please any suggestions.

live with it or be prepared for the cost of stripping it and putting a new finish on it

your fault you should of ask the people in home depot to give you a sample of the paint color to see how it really did look like.

Well, you don’t normally stain doors with paint, and either of you should have noticed fairly early on the color wasn’t correct (or that you didn’t like it. Strip and re-stain, or put another stain over it to get a color you like. Use a piece of test wood.

Stain is generally applied and then wiped off. There is something called gel stain that I see used on TV but I don’t think it is really a stain as it sits on the surface like paint… and from what I can tell, the results usually don’t look good.

Too late I’m afraid but you should have tried the colour on a small area of similar timber before proceeding as this would effect the ultimate shade.
However unless you are able to prove the colour you used is not red mahogany at the store, the only way is to repaint in the colour you want.

The stain will look different on different types of wood. What are your doors made of?
I have bought several cans of red mahogany stain and haven’t had any problem. Put another coat of stain on to make it darker and continue until you get the shade you want and then seal with a fast drying poly.

The lighting in home depot can be VERY misleading. I would talk to the manager and ask if this looks as described under a different lighting source. They need to set up areas with various lighting conditions to be more exact of the colors.
