To remove organic stains and smells, the best is an oxygenating cleaner. There are several kinds of these.

The first type, example, Oxiclean (Sodium percarbonate) is a powder mixed with hot water and put on and let soak for a few minutes up to 30 minutes.

The second type is a strong hydrogen peroxide (stronger than the drugstore variety that’s about 5% H2O2) with a catalyst (usually ammonia). It’s a two-part solution that’s mixed at point of use and used immediately. Again let it dwell for a few minutes. I have seen some of these in the grocery store & Lowe’s but can’t remember the names. I use a professional version.

Use either of these in conjuction with a rented wet-extraction cleaner (like Rug Doctor) that you can rent.

i was just at a pet store last night and they have a lot of things that are especially for pet stains and gets the oder out too. i would try that, they have brands that will work in a steam cleaner.

I use Bissell Pet Odor & Stain Remover in my hand-held cleaner. I am pretty sure you can use it in a steam cleaner. I also use mine on messes within 8 hours, so they aren’t completely set in. Over all, this stuff works great for me.

.They all work pretty well. Just make sure you get some cleaner that is specifically for pet stains, and odor. If your pet likes to use the same spot over and over than you would also want to treat that spot with ammonia.
