Should I clean or replace pet damaged carpet?

My elderly dog had a lot of trouble controlling her peeing and pooping, and the carpet in the room where she spent a lot of time smells bad. We cleaned up after her with towels and different pet stain cleaners, but the room definitely has a bad odor. Should we spend the money on a professional cleaning or spend a lot more to replace it? Obviously I’d rather spend less, but can it really be cleaned? The smell has got to be down in the pad, not just in the carpet :(

If the smell is down in the pad, you’ll need to replace it. We had the same problem in our house, but this was a kid that the prior owners had with a lot of behavior problems who would urinate on the carpet. If it was just a few isolated instances, I’d say clean it, but if it’s in the pad, you’ll have to tear it out and start again. Remember if it’s into the floor underneath, you’ll need to neutralize the urine w/vinegar and water and go over it many times w/baking soda water, then let it dry out a lot before having new carpet layed. Going to a big box store you can usually get affordable carpet w/the least expensive padding very reasonable. We hired their contractors who were very reasonably priced, and believe me, I watch every penny! Good luck!

Bummer. Replace it if you can. And if you’ll have more pets, or children, or even a sloppy spouse, invest in a machine like the Hoover steamvac or even any cheap wet/dry vac so you can suck up spills when they happen. I don’t know how I ever lived without a wet vac! As you have learned, the towels and carpet cleaning sprays don’t remove the offending substance!

    hello,
i have two large dogs and several pups at this time so i know what you are going thru. truthfully, it would be better to replace the carpet, you truly don’t have to spend alot of money. look online for building materials auctions in your area, you can find rock bottom prices on carpeting and padding at these type of auctions or architectural resale auctions. also you can look in the paper for remnant carpets that carpet company’s cannot move or that carpet installers have left over from jobs. most of the installers will even place it in your room for a reasonable rate. if you insist on cleaning the carpet, try "foul odor remover". the carpet has to be saturated in it, the you extract what is left with a carpet cleaner, rent a blower to dry carpet. it will reallllly stink until it is dry, but will remove all of the order, but by the time you get done doing all of this, you could have replaced it for around the same money as it would cost for remnant carpet. wish you well.

Ya most definately replace it, there is probably so much bacteria in there that you do not want to know about. I would replace it with a hardwood or laminate floor. Laminate is cheap and easy to clean and install. It will prevent any odor and mess form being trouble in the future. Good Luck

We had this problem only it was a cat who kept going back to the same place. It was in the hall way and I finally ripped it out. We have a wood floor so I just use a runner in the hall now. I think you will just waste your time and money trying to clean that carpet. Believe me I tried to save mine.
