Should I sand a stained cabinet before I apply Min-Wax stain/varnish ? I want to “freshen up” the old finish.

This cabinet was originally stained about 20 years ago. It is showing signs of wear. I want to restain and varnish it to give it an even finish.

Go over it with steel wool. Try not to do the areas that turn white, That means that the finish is gone and you are removing the old stain or you could say color. Get a separate stain and try to match the color. Close is good enough. Apply with rag as heavy as needed to match, with another rag wipe of until color is the same. Only were needed . Then clear coat varnish all. light steel wool again . Then varnish as many time as you like . 3or 4 coats Will do best.

Absolutely. The stain can not penetrate through dirt and wax buildup…or a previous coat of varnish or urethane.

If its only got stain on it, give it a going over with #000 steel wool. If it has varnish, use sandpaper.
