The stain go’s into the wood. If the stain you want is darker just try to re-stain. If the stain is dark, you may have to sand the door to remove the color. However the result will be marginal. If the door is dark and you want to lighten the color.
You can try washing with minerial spirits to lighten. Every suggestion I have will produce marginal results. After the work is stained your results are marginal however it comes out. Contact your local paint store and see if they can help.
I have done considerable finishing of new work in churches and homes and I come on point to mix my stains to exactly what I want on test pieces or on the edge of the work where it won,t show. Never go directly to the work without staining and varnishing test pieces. After varnishing the work will look different.

You’re likely going to have to sand it out. Stain isn’t a surface application like paint. It actually soaks into the top layer of the wood.

Stain removers or strippers are generally more for use on decks or siding (where you use a power washer to prepare the surface).
