    You are probably going to need to hire a professional to get it out. If they can not remove the stain then there are some options to dying the stain depending on the type of carpeting. Once a stain is set it can be difficult if not impossible to completely remove.

    What you don’t want to do is try this and that… household cleaners because they usually just make things worse. The right tool for the right job… much cheaper than replacing the carpeting.

    I have to assume a couple of things:
    1) that the stain is on the ceiling;
    2) that the leak was repaired

    With those assumptions, there are a couple of choices. 1) You could just let the area dry for a couple of weeks. If the ceiling material appears sound after drying, simply coat it with a product designed to cover stains, (this is my favorite: http://www.zinsser.com/product_detail.asp?ProductID=123) then paint with a high quality ceiling paint. 2) If you don’t want to wait, or if the ceiling material seems soft or spongy, you’ll need to cut out the affected area, install a patch, then prime and paint.

    The first option is the easier, but it will be a few weeks before the ceiling is "good as new". The second option is more difficult, but can be done over the course of a few days.
