Many laundry detergents are not designed to be used on carpets. They do not rinse out easily and they leave a soap residue in the carpet that attracts soil. So the spot only looks clean immediately after you have cleaned it or spotted it. Within hours it will be dirty again. This keeps happening until you get the soap residue completely rinsed out.

Resolve works best, the pet type would really help with the urine odor. Otherwise laundry soap is ok there isn’t enough ammonia in pee to make a chemical reaction. I would be more worried as to why their was pee on your dorm room carpet.

It done now anyway – no use worrying about it. Ammonia and detergent are both alkaline so they won’t react. Ammonia is sometimes used with detergent for cleaning.

  4. Joe says:

Ammonia won’t react badly with laundry detergent.

It’s chlorine bleach and ammonia you’re thinking about. Don’t mix those two: you’ll get a toxic gas.
