What is better on rough cedar? Stain or paint,and can anyone recommend a quality product?

    What are you using the cedar for?

    Cedar is a great product that withstands the outdoors without any application of materials, it weathers into a really beautiful silver grey color with no treatments, and it rot and bug resistant.

    i would look further into it before you apply anything, once you apply something you will have to maintain it constantly, sanding and reapplying throughout the years whereas if you leave it natural you will never have to do anything to it.

    cabot stain you can get it transparent or a solid stain(looks like paint) the stain is formulated to penetrate the wood giving longer protection from the elements than a latex or oil paint.i even use the water clean up with oil capabilities stain it is sweeeeet.
