If you have a steam cleaner, or rent one, use 1 of the cheaper shampoos & add 1 scoop oxi-clean to the water tank everytime you fill it. Use spot shot on the stains before you clean the carpet. Let it sit a few minutes before steam cleaning. I've used this method on my light beige carpets & it works great. And spot shot takes out almost everything you can think of.

I once got tar on my berber carpet and I used WD40 to remove it and it worked great. Just don't use to much when you spray it and blot it up with a clean white towel or paper towel after a few minutes.

If it is a large area then you can always rent a carpet cleaner and do the whole thing. I have found over the years when you clean a carpet sometimes the stains look like they have disappeared and then about a month later they seem to work themselves back up to the surface, so I don't think a carpet is ever thoroughly and totally cleaned!
