What is the best way to clean a couch covered in pet urine stains?

My couch needs an overall cleaning, and has a few old pet urine stains in it as well. I am looking for a steam cleaner that I can purchase myself. I don’t want to have to pay 0 to get my couches cleaned by a professional company. Anybody know of any good steam cleaner brands that can clean old stains in couches? What’s the best shampoo to go along with it?
I’ve used pet urine cleaners on the stains, but they just make a dark spot on my furniture after they dry.

You need to clean the pet stains 1st before shampooing. You can find enyzme cleaner at the pet stores (Petco, PetSmart, etc). My suggestion is to spend $20 to buy a black light that will shine where-ever there are pet stains, so you can special treat those areas 1st.

Get some Urine B Gone. Sell it at Wal-mart.

My concern is the urine has gotten down into the batting or fill. Any chance you can remove the cushion covers and check?

Urine is especially hard to remove. You might need to go to a medical supply store, otherwise there are pet cleaners that should help.

I’m not sure any of the home cleaners are really that good. I have a Hoover and am so-so impressed. Friends with Bissel are equally not excited…..not mad, just not excited. You may have to do some light scrubbing on your own as well as the "steam" cleaner. I’ve yet to see a lot of steam out of those things.

Whatever you end up with, steam cleaning, alone, will not remove the stains. Any pet urine solution should be used before you steam.
