What is the best way to get salt water stains off of the side of a fish tank?

I just got a tank that was used for a salt water aquarium and it has a bunch of water stains all over the sides. I tried windex and hot water and just plain soap but i cant get it off.

Any suggestions?
I just tried both the toothpaste and the white vinager but it still wont come off…ugg…

Shouldn’t have used soap or windex. No chemical type of products should ever be used.

Try some vinegar and a soft scrubbie type of pad. Rinse very good, and hopefully there won’t be any residue left from the soap or windex-I’m assuming you meant for the inside of the tank of course. I still wouldn’t use it on the outside either. I use a vinegar/water mix to clean the outside of my tanks.

Edit: It still hasn’t come out? I guess you could try buffing the glass, then, with very very fine glass buffing sandpaper. They generally carry buffing paper in hardware stores. Good luck :)

I used toothpaste (paste, not gel) and one of those soft scrubbing pads that wouldn’t scratch the glass of the aquarium, and the mineral stains came right off. There are other methods, too, I’m sure.

About the vinegar: I’ve heard that you can use half vinegar, half water, and a drop of dish soap, and that this mixture works better than windex to clean glass. And by the way vinegar is a chemical, it’s called dilute acetic acid, and its formula is CH3COOH. So this overwhelming fear of all things "chemical" is misfounded. Unless it adheres to the glass, it’ll rinse right off.

Use white vinegar, it’s not harmful to fish but i’d just make sure you rinse it just to be on the safe side.
