what is the difference between exterior paint and exterior stain?

I have and outside wall that I am try to get the paint off and then I want to repaint or colour stain it in blue not natural

    There are different types of exterior stains. A solid stain is very similar to a flat paint. The real difference is film build and viscosity. Solid stains are a bit thinner than paint, and are easier to apply to rough sawn lumber, they will push into the pores of the wood a little easier. On smooth wood you will get better hide and coverage with a paint. Either paint or stain may be self priming over bare wood – depends on the product.

    Semi transparent stains on the other hand are very different than solid stains or paint. These are closer to an interior stain, in that they will allow a bit of the underlying surface to show through. Semi transparent stains are low build coatings great for first time finishing of wood, or for natural looking finishes used on houses. You are limited with a semi transparent stain to new work, or over a similar color previously stained surface. Multiple coats of semi transparent stain will eventually become opaque – and look like a solid stain.

    I always heard that there was a difference, but when my husband went to buy Kilz brand of outdoor paint this spring, (he had used it before), it now says indoor/outdoor. Well, he tried it on the garage and it didn’t cover that well. I would not use paint that was not specified the surface to be painted. The biggest thing is painting, is the time to get the surface ready and doing the work. No sense in using something that might cause you a problem.

    Exterior paint remains on the outside of the wood. Exterior stain soaks into the wood. Stains tend to last longer but are harder to remove from wood. You actually have to remove a small layer of wood by sanding it away.

    i didnt know you could get a stain to paint a masonry wall . i would stick to outdoor masonry paint tried and tested
