    If it is a mosquito it can be the blood of the last person it fed on as I know to my cost!
    Cochineal insects have naturally red body fluid due to the chemicals in them needed for oxygen use rather like we have haemoglobin in our blood.
    Cochineal insects are harvested – frequently from cacti in warm climates – squashed and the red liquid sieved off and dried. It is then used as a ‘natural’ food colouring.
