What will remove a bad rust stain from a white cotton hat? (please read/help)?

My brother went on vacation and my mom didn't let him take his favorite Broncos hat with him (So he wouldn't lose it) Then while he was gone, she took down these old shelfs in his room for a surpise… and guess what… one of them had a rusted end and it ended up sitting on his hat for about 3 weeks. Now there is this huge rust stain on it and he's comming back really soon.
Everyone is paniced and well, if you have any idea. besides bleach which we already tried… all it did was slightly and I mean slightly lighten the stain.
Thanks in advance

    Rust removal:

Always read your garment label before any treatment.

Apparently chlorine bleach will make rust stains permanent.
For small rust stains: use an application of lemon juice and salt. Repeat as necessary.
Commercial rust removers can also be used. Rinse thoroughly and wash using liquid laundry detergent and oxygen bleach. Severe rust stains will require a commercial rust remover but use them cautiously and as directed on the package.

Always be extra careful around bleach!

I used WESTLEY'S BLECHE-WHITE for car tires (Its used to get brake pad filing off of car tires) to get a rust stain off my son's karate Gi- the thing cost $110 and & I was not ready to buy a new one. Clorox will not work nor will oxy clean.
