The wood I’m applying it on is Honduras Mahogany
I’ve tried stains such as Minwax’s Sedona Red and Red Oak, and they all turn out really brown.
I am crafting an electric guitar.

At lowes they have a stain called Red Wine, no joke.

The Honduras mahogany should be fairly close to the color you want to start with. Use some clear varnish or poly urethane on a piece of scrap to see how close it is. Check with someone at your local hardware or paint store if your color doesn’t match up. Those guys have given me great advise over the years. And I have to ask. What are you building? Whatever it is, I hope it comes out nice.

They sell stains now made by Minwax that you can have tinted to most any color.

If you want the very very dark red you will not find it in an over the counter mix….it will never get to the darkness you want. You will have to go to an exclusive paint store, such as sherwyn williams and have them mix you a custom color. I know, i have been that route….If you can get a sample color, all the better. I do touch-up work and re-fiinishing for a living, and I know the difficulty in achieving the very dark colors. Again, that is if you want the color to be very dark, but not hide the grain.
