What’s the best way to remove urine stains from the bottom of a plastic cage?

My guinea pig’s cage is a white plastic tub on the bottom, about 6 inches deep, and metal on top. The white plastic is starting to stain with urine. Is there a way to remove the stains and prevent new ones? Scrubbing hard with soap and water is not working. And, of course, I don’t want to use any chemicals that will hurt my guinea pig.

If you use bleach make sure to let the cage dry out really well before putting the guinea pig back in.

I use vinegar. It neutralizes the stuff that causes the stains, and it’s not a nasty chemical, so it won’t harm the guinea pigs. You can use it straight if the stains are really bad, just pour some vinegar over them and let it set for a couple hours. Otherwise you can just dilute the vinegar a bit and wipe down the cage. I do this every time I clean the cage, so stains don’t have time to set in.

    Good luck!

Use bleach, and then rinse well….there will be no soapy residue as with other cleaning chemicals, but make sure to get all of the bleach rinsed off…
