What’s with all these dark spots appearing in my laundry???

Every once in a while, some of my clothes will come out of the washing machine covered with stains. It’s only like 1-2 pieces of laundry per load, and only every 4-5 loads. The clothes are ruined. Is there anything that would cause my machine to do this… what…. how…..solution?

Also, could it be because I pour liquid fabric softener directly onto the clothes (I don’t use a Downy ball)?? That wouldn’t stain them, would it??

I’ve had liquid softener stain clothes in the past but I couldn’t give it up and switch to dryer sheets because I don’t think they work as well. There are some brands that have a NO DYE option. I think Downy does, comes with a WHITE cap. Use THAT, or slowly pour it in once the rinse water fills up.

HOWEVER, if what you are seeing are black specks….I doubt that it’s the softener. I would wonder if maybe some of your articles are getting caught under the spinny thing and picking up some specks of grease. I had that experience myself once.

You might want to give your washing machine a "tune up". Call a repair man and see what it would cost just to make sure everything is tightened properly and cleaned well. It might be worth the cost to prevent any further damage to clothing as well as wear and tear on your machine.

If you can determine what the marks actually are, then you could find a product that might take the stains out. If NOT, rather than toss the clothes, consider DYEING them a darker color. Most supermarkets, craft stores, etc. carry packets or bottles of a wide variety of colored dyes. You’ll have all NEW clothes…all black..but new. hee hee

    GOODLUCK!!!

Yes, the fabric softener will stain if you put it directly on there. Try to pour it in the water only, and not on the clothes itself and see if this helps.

Try dryer sheets instead. I had that problem and don’t anymore since not using softner in my washing machine.

It could be a belt going out,and when this happens you can get little grease spots on your clothes.

I would check the amount of detergent you are putting in. I don’t think the fabric softener would do it, but it might. Also make sure you remove the clothing as soon as the load is done. If the spots are brown it could be rust from the washer.

If you are using liquid detergent and you put it in after you do the clothes it will stain the clothes. You should put in the detergent in before the clothes and turn the washer on. Also if you are using fabric softener try to wait to the washer is completely filled with the rinse water before you add the softener.

Look for something lodged in one of the drain holes. How old is the washer? Check your appliance manual for troubleshooting. Also, jeans with metal rivets, tops with studs can rust, and stain other pieces of clothing. If it looks like rust, try rubbing real lemon juice on the stain, if that doesn’t work, try using CLR cleaning treatment. Then rewash. Good luck!!!

I had this problem with my washer too. I checked really well inside the washer basket and found several rust spots. I sealed them with clear paint and now have no more spots on my clothes. I imagine over time I will have to redo the paint but it*s cheaper than a new washer.
