Why do toenails get stained after using nail polish?

Whenever I use nail polish on my toes, even though I don’t keep it on for long, it stains my toe nails yellow. It’s very unattractive. There is nothing wrong with my nails. I have tried using several layers of base coat underneath the nail polish but it doesn’t seem to help. Recently as an experiment, I allowed the stained nail to grow out until there was fresh, clear nail remaining. Believe it or not it took a few months. Then I used only clear nail polish on my toes for about one week. When I removed it I found that the clear top coat had stained my nails too! Is there some special brand that won’t cause this? And why is it happening?

You need to use a base coat before you put the colour on, it stops the nail varnish staining them. Use "Out the door" base coat. Also if you use fake tan it will be staining your nails yellow

You can use Lemon Juice to get stains off, also Steredent (false teeth cleaner) :)

the polish cuts off the oxygen supply to your nails!

it might be a fungal infection. also if you want to get rid if it quickly rub an emery board all along the top. that sounds like it got serious though ;\
